about

Much like a used futon, God’s Furniture appeared on Craigslist in Portland, ME in August of 2020. Drawing from a bright and quirky punk legacy, the bombastic power-trio of Stephen Bennett (guitar), Brie Van Kleef (bass), and Mario Epstein (drums), share an admiration of fast-paced tunes, as well as a deep love for the manga adaptation of Catcher in the Rye. Their performances are abrasive but welcoming, like a warm towel after a cold shower in an even colder room. This past year God’s Furniture has played shows throughout the northeast from The Apohadion Theater to The Middle East to Freddy’s Bar in Brooklyn. Their debut album, Smiley Roun’ Th’ Lips, will be released on January 19th, 2024.

Like peanut butter, jelly, and bacon bits, this trio of plucky young troubadours have the essential rock’n’roll chemistry. Stephen’s shimmering and frenetic guitar is balanced by Brie’s unwavering bass grooves, and matched by Mario’s manic pounding. You’ll hear it loud and clear on “County Fair,” an absurdist ballad that sounds like laughing from a skinned knee. Not to keep you from crying, but because you know how funny you look right now.

These are songs for when things are getting better, but you aren’t better yet. Maybe your life is already full of those kinds of ups and downs, or maybe it just feels like it because you’ve been down so long it looks like up to you. But in all the times you’ve been told you’re “running from my problems” has anybody ever thought to mention that running is good for you? And if it makes you healthy it can’t be that bad. In fact you better bump this album and push through those shin splints because somewhere up in heaven the phrase “the further I can get away from myself, the closer I can get to my truth” is carved in the arm of a piece of God’s Furniture.
